Cosmetic surgery and the Hippocratic Oath?

Question by aural margin: Cosmetic surgery and the Hippocratic Oath?
Do doctors who only perform unneccesary procedures such as breast enlargements, botox and collagen injections and other "enhancements" take the Hippocratic Oath?

If so, how does the oath apply? Do such procedures truly contribute to the overall health and well-being of an individual?

To society? Short and long term?

Yes, they must take the oath (if you are in America). As long as the procedure does no harm, it should not violate their oath. If the procedure is an extreme risk for a certain patient, it should not be done. Often cosmetic procedures may benefit the mental health. (Yes, sometimes they are just frivolous and vain.)

Also, depending on the procedure the person may not need to be a real doctor (even if they refer to them-self as doctor) so check their credentials. If they aren't actually a doctor, it's likely that they never took the oath. Many cosmetic procedures aren't regulated the same way other medicine is, so it's harder to say for sure that it is in violation.

My advice is to do lots of research so that you don't wind up a cautionary tale. Research the procedure, the place you are having it, the doctor, and laws about cosmetic surgery. This is a drastic measure and should be well thought out. Most of all, if you feel you can be happy without the procedure and can live without it don't get it because it is a big risk.
